Salt-based ion-exchange physically removes calcium and magnesium ions from the water, replacing them with sodium. Result: zero scale, slippery shower water, longer appliance life. Salt-free template-assisted-crystallization (TAC) conditioners catalyze the calcium into stable nano-crystals that pass through plumbing without depositing — scale is prevented but the minerals still pass through. TAC works well on moderately hard North York water (7–8 gpg) but is less effective on very hard well water (>20 gpg).
