# Gas Line Burial Depth Toronto Code 2026
The minimum burial depth for a residential outdoor gas line in Ontario is 18 inches (450 mm) of cover above the top of the pipe, increasing to 24 inches (600 mm) where vehicular traffic crosses the line. These are not negotiable and they are the most common code item missed on shortcut installations.

- 24 inches (600 mm) minimum cover where vehicular traffic crosses (driveways, parking pads, side-yard access strips wide enough for a vehicle).
- Sleeve or concrete protection is required where the line crosses under any driveway or parking pad โ typically a steel or PVC sleeve sized so the gas line can be replaced without re-excavating the driveway.
- Tracer tape (yellow polyethylene marked "CAUTION: GAS LINE BURIED BELOW") laid 6 to 12 inches above the pipe.
- Tracer wire (#14 AWG insulated copper) laid alongside CSST or any non-metallic-jacketed run, terminated at accessible above-grade points so an electronic locator can find the line.
Why Depth Matters
Several real-world scenarios drive the depth requirements:
- Frost heave. The Toronto frost line under bare ground is typically 4 ft, but under turf it commonly reaches 18 to 24 inches. A pipe shallower than the frost depth is repeatedly stressed by ground movement, loosening fittings over years.
- Lawn equipment. Aerators, edging spades, and powered tilling tools penetrate 4 to 12 inches into a lawn. A pipe shallower than 12 inches is at risk every spring and fall.
- Garden activities. Planting trees, shrubs, or even some perennials involves digging 12 to 18 inches.
- Future excavation. Sewer line repairs, electrical trenches, irrigation systems โ anything dug after the gas line is installed can hit the line if it is too shallow and the tracer system is missing.
- Vehicle loads. A vehicle crossing a driveway puts 1,500+ lb point loads on the pavement. The 24-inch depth plus a sleeve provides the load distribution and impact protection needed.
Trench Bottom Preparation
The trench bottom matters as much as the depth:
- Free of rocks larger than 2 inches. Sharp rocks under a CSST jacket or a black iron pipe coating create point-load failure points.
- Bedding sand layer โ typically 2 to 4 inches of clean sand under and around the pipe. Required for CSST in most Ontario installations to protect the jacket; recommended for black iron in rocky soil.
- Trench width โ typically 8 to 12 inches wide for residential service, enough for the gas-fitter to thread fittings and lay the pipe straight without bending.
Backfill Sequence
The right backfill sequence:
- 1. Bedding layer (2 to 4 inches of sand or pre-screened native soil).
- 2. Pipe in place, with all fittings completed and the pressure test passing.
- 3. First lift of select backfill (sand or screened soil) โ 4 to 6 inches above the top of the pipe.
- 4. Tracer tape laid 6 to 12 inches above the top of the pipe (within the first or second lift).
- 5. Second lift of native soil to grade.
- 6. Compaction as appropriate for the surface use.
If the trench is under a driveway or parking pad, the sleeve goes around the pipe at that section, and the trench gets compacted base course (typically Granular B or A) before the pavement is restored.
Where the Trench Routing Matters
A few real Toronto routing considerations:
- Property line setbacks. Some appliance pad locations (e.g., pool equipment pads) have to maintain a minimum distance from the property line per Toronto zoning. The trench routing follows from where the appliance can sit.
- Toronto Bylaw 681 sewer separation. A new gas line must maintain at least 1 m horizontal separation from sanitary or storm sewer connections, with 150 mm vertical separation where it crosses. Toronto Water locates are free and should be requested before trenching.
- Existing utilities. Ontario One Call (free) locates electrical, telecom, water, and other utility lines before any excavation. This is a legal requirement, not a courtesy.
- Tree protection. Toronto has municipal and protected trees on many properties; trenching within the dripline of a protected tree may require a permit or alternative routing.
- Permeable surface restoration. Toronto bylaws require certain ratios of permeable surface in front yards. A trench through a front lawn that gets restored as gravel may not meet bylaw โ restore as turf or a permeable interlock.
Coordination with Other Outdoor Work
The trench for a gas line is often dug in the same week as:
- Deck footings. The deck framer and the gas-fitter share the same backyard window.
- Interlock or hardscape removal and re-lay. The hardscape crew lifts the surface, the gas trench is dug, the line is laid and tested, the hardscape is re-laid.
- Pool equipment pad concrete pour. Gas line and electrical conduit are in place before the pad is poured.
