Expanded description (rendered as hero body + intro section)

Bathtub installation across Toronto and the GTA covers a wider variety of scope than most homeowners expect when they call. A like-for-like 60" alcove tub swap is a $1.5Kโ€“$2.5K install. A freestanding cast-iron clawfoot in a Forest Hill ensuite is a $4Kโ€“$8K install. A walk-in tub with a hydrotherapy package and accessibility-grade door swing for an aging-in-place client is a $9Kโ€“$15K all-in project. A tub-to-shower conversion bumps the math into a different category entirely (see our dedicated [Tub-to-Shower Conversion](/services/kitchen-bath/tub-to-shower-conversion) page).

RenoHouse installs alcove, drop-in, freestanding, corner, walk-in, soaker, whirlpool/jetted, and clawfoot bathtubs throughout Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Vaughan, Markham, Richmond Hill, Oakville, Burlington, Etobicoke, Scarborough, and North York. All plumbing work performed by Ontario-licensed 306A plumbers; any electrical for jetted-tub motors or walk-in tub heated air systems is wired by 309A (ECRA/ESA) electricians on dedicated GFCI circuits per OESC 26.700โ€“26.726.

The bathtub decision is permanent-feeling because it usually is. The drain rough-in (1.5" trap arm), supply rough-in (8" or 4" widespread), and wall surround tile pattern are all built around the tub you choose โ€” changing the tub later means re-cutting drain piping, re-tiling the surround, and probably re-drywalling. Decide once, decide right.

Material Comparison โ€” What Survives 20 Years in Toronto

Acrylic (with fibreglass backing) โ€” Most common 2026 install. Light (60โ€“80 lb empty), warm to the touch, repairable scratches. Mid-tier brands (MAAX, Mirolin, Acri-Tec) $400โ€“$1,200; premium (Bain Ultra, MTI) $2,500โ€“$6,000. Lifespan 15โ€“25 years. Can yellow with UV over time in window-lit bathrooms.

Porcelain-on-Steel โ€” Heavier (90โ€“140 lb), colder surface, less expensive. Will chip if a heavy object is dropped (chip exposes raw steel that rusts). Lifespan 15โ€“20 years. Common in rental/property-management spec.

Cast Iron with Porcelain Enamel โ€” Heaviest (280โ€“400 lb empty, 600โ€“800 lb full). Best heat retention for long soaks. Lifespan 50+ years with care. Kohler Iron Tones, classic clawfoot reproductions. Upper-floor installs require joist verification โ€” pre-1960 Toronto homes with 2ร—8 joists at 16" o.c. usually need sistering for cast iron on a second floor.

Solid Surface (Corian-type, cultured marble) โ€” Premium freestanding tubs (Aquatica, Victoria + Albert, BainUltra Cella) cast from blends of stone composite, resin, or solid-surface materials. $3,000โ€“$8,000 hardware. Repairable surface, warm touch, sculpted shapes possible.

Copper โ€” Custom artisan tubs. $4,000โ€“$15,000. Antimicrobial properties real but minor. Patina develops over years. Maintenance commitment is real (avoid acidic cleaners, dry after use).

Stone Resin (composite) โ€” Premium contemporary freestanding (Wyndham, Empava). $1,400โ€“$4,500. Light vs solid-stone but visually identical. Good thermal retention.

Tub brand comparison

Premium Tier

  • Bain Ultra (Quebec) โ€” Therapeutic air-jet specialty. Charism, Inua, Vibrato lines. $4,000โ€“$8,000. ThermoMasseur air system 2ร— quieter than traditional whirlpool jets. Eligible for HATC if specified for accessibility scope.
  • Aquatica (USA) โ€” Solid surface freestanding centerpieces. $3,500โ€“$9,000. Strong design portfolio for Tier 4 ensuites.
  • Victoria + Albert (UK) โ€” Volcanic-limestone QuaryCast freestanding. $4,500โ€“$9,500. Industry-leading thermal retention.
  • Kohler โ€” Premium cast-iron freestanding (Iron Bath, Iron Works), drop-ins, jetted (Underscore). $1,400โ€“$6,000.

Mid-Tier (Workhorse for Most Toronto Installs)

  • MAAX (Quebec) โ€” Strong acrylic alcove and freestanding selection. Modulr, Optik, Skybox. $600โ€“$2,800. Distributor support is the best in Canada.
  • Mirolin (Canada) โ€” Builder-favourite acrylic. Aristotle, Brava, Madison. $400โ€“$1,400. Common in mid-market new builds.
  • American Standard โ€” Princeton (alcove), Studio (drop-in), Cadet (whirlpool). $400โ€“$1,400. Solid mid-tier value.
  • Acri-Tec (Canada) โ€” Toronto-distributed acrylic at competitive pricing. $400โ€“$1,000.

Walk-In Tub Specialist

  • Safe Step (USA) โ€” Industry leader. Inward-swinging door, hydrotherapy options. $5,500โ€“$10,500 hardware + $2,500โ€“$4,500 install.
  • Premier Care โ€” UK-Canadian. Comparable to Safe Step. $5,000โ€“$9,500.
  • Ella's Bubbles (USA) โ€” Hydrotherapy specialist, dual-massage systems. $5,500โ€“$9,500.
  • Kohler Belay โ€” Premium walk-in entry. $7,500โ€“$12,000.

Avoid

  • Generic Amazon / Wayfair "luxury freestanding" under $800. Wall thickness inadequate, faucet drillings often non-standard, cracking common.
  • Pre-2014 used/auction units (lead-content compliance unclear under Ontario Reg 169/03).

What's included in standard install: Removal and disposal of old tub, plumbing connection to existing supply and drain, levelling and securing to studs/floor, flange flashing for tub-to-tile junction, code-compliant overflow assembly, full leak test (24-hour flood test for drop-ins and freestanding).

What's not included by default: New tile surround (priced separately), new vanity or toilet, new fixtures (faucet/shower trim โ€” most clients pair tub install with new trim, add $300โ€“$1,400 for trim install depending on tier), drywall finish if wall opened.

Plumbing & Structural Specs You Should Know

Markham freestanding tub

Drain rough-in: Standard 1.5" P-trap with 1.5" trap arm to vent stack. Drain centerline 14" from finished wall for most alcove tubs (check the spec sheet on YOUR tub). Pre-1960 homes often have galvanized vent stacks undersized for modern fixture flow โ€” older tubs gurgle and drain slowly, new tubs may need vent rework ($400โ€“$900).

Supply rough-in: Tub spout and shower diverter typically 8"โ€“10" above tub deck. Faucet (handle) centerline depending on tub type. Floor-mount supply (for freestanding) needs a floor flange and accessible shut-off under the floor or in the basement ceiling.

Floor structural capacity: A 60" alcove acrylic tub full of water + person weighs 600โ€“700 lb spread over ~10 sqft. Standard 2ร—8 floor joists at 16" o.c. handle this fine. Cast iron freestanding full of water + person can hit 1,000+ lb concentrated on 4 feet โ€” needs joist verification, often sistering on upper floors of pre-1960 homes.

Vent fan capacity: OBC 9.32.3 requires minimum 50 CFM continuous or intermittent mechanical exhaust ducted to exterior. For bathrooms with tubs used for long soaks, we recommend 80โ€“110 CFM with humidity sensor (Panasonic WhisperGreen, Broan Sensonic).

Waterproofing: Wherever new tile meets the new tub (tub flange / apron and adjacent walls), Schluter Kerdi membrane or RedGard liquid membrane mandatory under tile per OBC 9.29.10. We band the tub-to-tile flange with Kerdi-Band or Kerdi-Fix at the transition.

GTA Neighbourhood Notes

Forest Hill, Rosedale, Yorkville: Premium freestanding centerpieces โ€” Aquatica, Victoria + Albert, BainUltra Charism. Often paired with separate walk-in shower (no longer either/or). Cast-iron in heritage homes preserved or reglazed rather than replaced.

Riverdale, Cabbagetown, Leslieville: Heritage tub preservation common โ€” original 1920s cast-iron clawfoot reglazed in-place ($600โ€“$1,200) rather than replaced. When replacement is required, period-reproduction clawfoot reigns (Cheviot, Sign of the Crab, Strom).

North York, Etobicoke 60sโ€“70s Bungalows: Original cast-iron alcoves at end-of-life. Cut-in-place demo (we carry recip saws and tarps). Replacement usually acrylic alcove (MAAX, Mirolin) for cost efficiency. Sometimes converted to walk-in shower instead.

Mississauga, Brampton, Vaughan Newer Detached: Acrylic alcove or drop-in in main bath, freestanding soaker in master ensuite. American Standard and MAAX dominant.

Upper-floor bathrooms in any pre-1960 detached: Joist verification on freestanding cast-iron installs. Sister joists if 2ร—8 at 16" o.c. or worse.

Downtown Condos: Acrylic alcove only (weight + elevator material handling). Sound-isolation mat under tub mandatory by most condo boards.

Cabbagetown / Narrow Staircase Access: Tub size must be measured against staircase clearance โ€” anything wider than 32" through narrow Victorian staircases requires special handling or cut-in-place removal of old tub. We measure access paths before ordering replacement.

Bridle Path, Mississauga Lake-Front Estates: Custom freestanding showpieces โ€” Aquatica, BainUltra Inua, Victoria + Albert Tay. Often integrated into spa-tier ensuites with separate steam shower.

Walk-In Tub vs Curbless Shower โ€” Honest Decision

Close-up of tub drain shoe, overflow plate, and PEX supply connections under bathtub
Tub plumbing detail

The most common 2026 question from aging-in-place clients is which to install. Honest answer: curbless shower is usually the better long-term choice (see [Walk-In Shower](/services/kitchen-bath/walk-in-shower) and [Accessibility Renovation](/services/handyman/accessibility-renovation)). A walk-in tub keeps the bath experience but introduces real downsides:

  • Drain-time concern. Walk-in tubs must be filled and drained while seated inside (door can't open against water pressure). Filling takes 6โ€“10 minutes, draining 5โ€“8 minutes. Many users find this uncomfortable, especially in cooler bathrooms.
  • Door seal aging. Door gasket is a wear item โ€” needs replacement every 5โ€“8 years ($150โ€“$350).
  • Hardware cost premium. Walk-in tubs are 3โ€“5ร— more expensive than equivalent-comfort acrylic alcove tubs.
  • Resale neutrality. Walk-in tubs are seen as "medical-looking" by some buyers and can be a slight resale negative; curbless showers are increasingly viewed as luxury / universal-design and resale-positive.

Walk-in tubs are right when:

  • Client specifically prefers baths over showers and has good balance for transfer.
  • Hydrotherapy (air jets) is medically beneficial.
  • HATC tax credit is being claimed and walk-in tub purchase is documented as accessibility-related.

We discuss this on-site before recommending one or the other.

Compliance & Code

  • OBC Section 7 (Plumbing): Trap and vent sizing, 1.5" minimum drain on tubs.
  • OBC 9.29.10: Waterproofing membrane required behind any tile wall enclosing a tub or shower.
  • OBC 9.32.3: Mechanical ventilation minimum 50 CFM exhausted to exterior.
  • OESC 26.700โ€“26.726: GFCI protection on all wet-zone receptacles; whirlpool/jetted tub motors must be on dedicated GFCI; switches min 1m from tub edge.
  • Ontario Reg 169/03 / NSF/ANSI 372: Lead-free compliance on faucets and any in-line valves on potable supply.
  • CSA B651: Accessibility design standard for walk-in tubs and barrier-free bathing โ€” referenced for HATC documentation.
  • Toronto Plumbing Permit: Required for any drain or supply relocation. RenoHouse handles application and inspection coordination.

FAQ (14 items)

Bathtub type comparison grid showing alcove, drop-in, freestanding, and walk-in options
Tub style options
  1. How long does bathtub installation take? Standard alcove like-for-like: 4โ€“6 hours. Drop-in with existing platform: 6โ€“8 hours. Freestanding: 1 day. Walk-in tub: 1โ€“2 days. With new tile surround: add 2โ€“3 days.
  1. Can I install a freestanding tub on the second floor of my older Toronto home? Usually yes, but cast-iron freestanding requires joist verification. Pre-1960 homes with 2ร—8 joists at 16" o.c. often need sistering ($600โ€“$1,400). Solid-surface or acrylic freestanding (light weight) usually no reinforcement needed.
  1. What's the difference between a soaker tub and a regular tub? Depth. Standard tubs are 14"โ€“17" deep; soakers are 18"โ€“24" deep. Soakers cover more of your body for true full-immersion bathing. Floor structural and water-heater capacity (a soaker holds 60โ€“90 gallons vs 40โ€“50 for standard) matter.
  1. Should I reglaze my old cast-iron tub or replace it? Reglaze costs $600โ€“$1,200 and lasts 8โ€“15 years; replacement costs $1,800โ€“$3,800 and lasts 25โ€“50 years. Reglaze if the tub is structurally sound (no rust-through, no major chips), drain works, and you like the size/style. Replace if any of those conditions fail.
  1. Can you remove a cast-iron tub from a narrow upstairs bathroom? Yes. We cut cast iron in place with a reciprocating saw using diamond blades, dropping it into manageable pieces, and carry the pieces out by hand. Adds $400โ€“$900 to standard removal cost. Tarps protect surrounding finishes.
  1. Do whirlpool/jetted tubs need a dedicated circuit? Yes. OESC 26.700 requires a dedicated 15A or 20A GFCI circuit for the motor. Pre-1990 Toronto homes often don't have one โ€” new circuit pull adds $400โ€“$700. ESA Notification required ($140โ€“$280).
  1. Are jetted tubs sanitary? I've heard they grow mould. Older multi-jet whirlpool systems with internal water lines can harbour biofilm if not flushed regularly. Modern air-jet systems (Bain Ultra ThermoMasseur, Kohler BubbleMassage) don't recirculate water and are dramatically more sanitary. We recommend air-jet over water-jet for new installs.
  1. Will you install a tub I bought online? Yes, we do customer-supply installs daily. We inspect on arrival for completeness (drain assembly, overflow, mounting hardware, faucet drillings to spec) and flag any quality concerns before opening the box. Customer-supplied freestanding tubs sometimes ship with wrong drain rough-in centerline โ€” we verify before scheduling.
  1. How heavy is a cast-iron tub? 280โ€“400 lb empty for a 60" alcove; 380โ€“650 lb empty for freestanding. Two-person carry minimum, sometimes three for narrow access. Full of water + person: 800โ€“1,200 lb. Joist verification mandatory on upper floors of older homes.
  1. Can you convert my tub to a walk-in shower? Yes โ€” this is currently the most popular Toronto bathroom upgrade. See [Tub-to-Shower Conversion](/services/kitchen-bath/tub-to-shower-conversion) for full scope, pricing ($9Kโ€“$20K), and process.
  1. What's the warranty? RenoHouse 2-year workmanship warranty on the install. Manufacturer warranties on the tub itself โ€” typically 10-yr limited on acrylic, 25-yr+ on cast iron, lifetime on premium solid-surface (BainUltra QuaryCast). Walk-in tubs typically lifetime on the shell, 5-yr on door seal, 5-yr on motor/heater.
  1. Do you tile around the tub too? Yes. We do the full tile surround as part of the install if specified. Standard subway tile surround $2,000โ€“$3,500 above tub install cost; large-format porcelain or marble-look slab $3,500โ€“$7,500.
  1. What if my drain rough-in is in the wrong spot for the new tub? Plumbing relocation. Cost depends on access โ€” if there's a basement or crawlspace below, $1,200โ€“$2,000. If we have to open and patch a finished ceiling below, $2,000โ€“$2,800. Always cheaper to choose a tub that matches your existing rough-in.
  1. Do you serve the entire GTA? Yes โ€” bathtub installation across Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Vaughan, Markham, Richmond Hill, Oakville, Burlington, Etobicoke, Scarborough, North York, and surrounding communities.

Toronto/GTA neighborhood considerations

  • Forest Hill / Rosedale / Lawrence Park (heritage): Cast-iron freestanding (Kohler Iron Works Historic, BainUltra Charism, Victoria + Albert Pescadero) $4.8K-$9.8K + floor-mounted exposed brass tub-filler (Watermark Bracketed Tub Filler, ROHL Country Bath) $2.4K-$5.4K. Pre-1940 floor joists 2x8 @ 16" o.c. โ€” 600-lb filled-tub load needs joist-doubler PEng stamp if span > 12 ft. Heritage Permit not triggered for interior fixture.
  • North York / Scarborough / Etobicoke (60s-70s): Mid-tier alcove 60" steel-enamel (Kohler Mendota Pro, American Standard Princeton) $580-$1,280 + 1-pc surround (Sterling Ensemble Vikrell, Maax Calanda) $480-$840. Total $2.4K-$4.8K install. 1960s galvanized supply pipe rough-in $480-$840 swap to PEX-A.
  • Mississauga / Brampton / Vaughan (90s+): Drop-in acrylic 60"-72" (Maax Optik, Aker by Maax Eternia) $980-$2,400 + Moen Genta tub-spout + 3-handle valve $640-$1,280. Total $3.4K-$6.4K. 90s ABS drain rough-in clean swap.
  • Caledon / King City / Aurora (rural large-lot): Estate-grade air-jetted (BainUltra Inua, MTI Aria) or copper hammered (Native Trails Maestro) $4.8K-$14K + freestanding deck-mounted exposed thermostatic mixer (Brizo Litze, Watermark Bracketed) $3.4K-$8.4K. Hard water (15+ gpg) โ€” Vario Premium softener upstream mandatory.
  • Downtown condos: Slim 54"-60" alcove (Maax Avenue, Kohler Bellwether 60") $640-$1,280 + 1-pc surround. Condo Act Section 98 if relocating drain. Slab-bound rough-in fixed โ€” replace existing inline only.

Standards: ASME A112.19.1 (cast iron + steel-enamel), A112.19.3 (stainless steel), A112.19.4 (acrylic + reinforced acrylic). Floor framing tub-load โ€” full-filled cast-iron 6-ft tub = 600-900 lb concentrated; check joist span per CSA O86 / OBC 9.23. Anti-scald valve ASSE 1016 (T/P or pressure-balanced) mandatory per OBC 7.6.5 since 2012.
