Frequently Asked Questions About Well Water Treatment in Aurora

Every well has unique water chemistry. Quoting without a lab test would be guessing. We need to know iron, manganese, hardness, sodium, nitrate, arsenic, lead, sulphur, TDS, pH, and alkalinity to spec the right multi-stage system. Wrong sequence (e.g. softener before manganese filter) destroys equipment within 6–12 months. The test costs $150–$400 and saves thousands in re-work.

PHO tests private wells for E. coli + total coliforms — bacterial contamination only. The test is free; bottle pickup at your local health unit. Recommended frequency: 3x per year (spring, summer, fall), with spring most critical due to thaw infiltration. PHO does NOT test for chemicals (iron, manganese, lead, nitrate, arsenic) — that's paid private-lab work.

Clear-water iron (ferrous, dissolved Fe²⁺) is invisible until it oxidizes on contact with air — then it stains orange. Standard ion-exchange softeners can clear up to ~3 mg/L of clear-water iron. Red-water iron (ferric, oxidized Fe³⁺ as rust particles) has already oxidized in the well or pipes — softeners cannot remove it. Red-water iron requires an oxidation/filter stage upstream — air injection + greensand, or Birm, or chlorination + carbon. The lab test tells us which kind you have.

Hydrogen sulphide (H₂S). Common in shield-edge wells across north Caledon, Mono, and north Uxbridge. Treatment options: air injection + greensand filter, ozone injection, or chlorination + activated carbon. Strong sulphur smell often indicates anaerobic bacterial activity in the well — shock chlorination may be needed alongside permanent treatment. Lab test confirms concentration; treatment sized to it.

Yes if you have any history of coliform-positive PHO tests, surface water influence (shallow dug well, damaged casing/cap), or simply want belt-and-suspenders biological safety. Viqua (made in Guelph) and Trojan are the two GTA standards. UV is permanent post-treatment — kills E. coli, total coliforms, viruses, Giardia, Cryptosporidium when sized correctly to peak flow. Bulb replacement annually (9,000-hour rule). UV does NOT remove chemicals — pair with sediment, iron filter, softener, and RO as needed.
