Water Softener Installation — Salt or Salt-Free, Sized to Your Water

Salt-based ion-exchange physically removes calcium and magnesium ions from the water, replacing them with sodium. Result: zero scale, slippery shower water, longer appliance life. Salt-free template-assisted-crystallization (TAC) conditioners catalyze the calcium into stable nano-crystals that pass through plumbing without depositing — scale is prevented but the minerals still pass through. TAC works well on moderately hard Toronto water (7–8 gpg) but is less effective on very hard well water (>20 gpg). Salt-based is more aggressive; salt-free is condo-friendly and lower-maintenance.

On Toronto Lake Ontario water (~7–8 gpg) a family of 4 typically uses 1–2 bags (40 lb each) per month — 12–24 bags per year, $300–$700 annually at Costco bulk pricing. On rural GTA well water (15–25 gpg) salt usage doubles or triples. Twin-tank Kinetico systems use 30–50% less salt than entry single-tank units due to more accurate metering.

Sometimes — depends on the building's drain and the condo declaration. Many GTA condo boards prohibit salt-based softeners due to brine sodium loading on the building's combined sewer drain (especially older buildings with shared sumps). Workaround: salt-free TAC conditioner (Pelican, Aquasana, SpringWell) — no brine, no backwash drain, board-friendly. Always check the condo declaration before quoting.

Salt-based softeners add roughly 7.5 mg of sodium per litre per gpg of hardness removed. On Toronto's 7–8 gpg, that's ~50–60 mg sodium per litre of softened water. For comparison, an 8oz glass of milk has 100 mg sodium, a slice of bread has 150 mg. Most healthy adults are not affected. Sodium-restricted (low-salt-diet) households should bypass the kitchen cold-water tap (un-softened drinking line) or use a TAC salt-free conditioner instead — both are standard accommodations we build into the quote.

Yes. Recommended order: water enters house → whole-house carbon (removes chlorine/chloramine that destroys softener resin) → softener (removes hardness) → RO at kitchen sink (removes residual TDS, fluoride, PFAS for drinking). Softening before RO doubles RO membrane life. Carbon before softener triples resin life on Toronto chloramine. We design every install in this sequence by default.
