BUT — if anything goes wrong (HVAC short, blown transformer), warranty / repair is on you. ECRA/ESA permit IS required if you add new wiring. Ecobee + Nest both work with Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Apple HomeKit, SmartThings. Honeywell T9 works with Alexa + Google Home (HomeKit support via Resideo app). All major smart home ecosystems supported.

Thermostat reverts to off until power restores. No HVAC operation during outage. Schedule preserved (saved to device + cloud). If your home has a standby generator (see our Standby Generator Installation page), normal operation continues throughout the outage.
