Specialty Water Filtration (PFAS, Arsenic, Fluoride, UV) in Toronto GTA

RenoHouse coordinates specialty health-targeted water filtration installs across Toronto and the GTA โ€” single-issue or stacked systems for PFAS, arsenic, fluoride, chromium-6, microbiological concerns that standard whole-house carbon and softeners do not address. Each install is driven by a specific lab-test result above guideline OR a documented health concern (pregnancy, immunocompromise, infant formula prep, chemo treatment, eczema, chemical sensitivity).

PFAS removal

Health Canada published an updated Objective on August 9, 2024: โ‰ค30 ng/L summed for 25 specified PFAS. Lake Ontario raw-water sampling has detected PFAS at low single-digit ng/L levels. Removal requires either reverse osmosis (most effective, >95% rejection on most PFAS chains) or NSF 53 / NSF 401-certified PFOA/PFOS reduction cartridges as a dedicated stage. Standard activated carbon block removes some PFAS but performance varies widely by chain length and contact time. Cost: $800โ€“$2,200 for dedicated PFAS-rated cartridge stage installed; $1,200โ€“$2,400 for tankless RO with PFAS coverage.

Arsenic removal

Geological pockets in the Canadian Shield edge (Muskoka, Haliburton edge, parts of north Durham / Northumberland) โ€” Health Canada MAC is 10 ยตg/L. Removal via adsorptive media โ€” Bayoxide E33 (iron-based), AdEdge (titanium-based), or RO. $1,200โ€“$3,000 installed for dedicated stage; lab test required to confirm valence (As(III) vs As(V)) before spec'ing media โ€” As(III) requires pre-oxidation.

Fluoride removal

Toronto fluoridates at 0.6 mg/L; York Region and Peel Region do NOT. Households moving from York to Toronto sometimes want fluoride removed. Standard carbon does NOT remove fluoride. Two options: (1) RO at kitchen sink โ€” 90โ€“95% rejection โ€” pairs with all our drinking-water builds; (2) activated alumina โ€” dedicated stage 90%+ removal, regenerates with periodic acid-soak, $800โ€“$1,800 installed.

UV sterilization (standalone or paired)

Viqua (made in Guelph) or Trojan UV โ€” biological-only treatment for immunocompromised households, post-coliform-positive bridging, or boil-water advisory durability. NSF 244 certification. $700โ€“$1,400 installed standalone. Bulb replacement annually (9,000-hour rule).

Chromium-6 / pharmaceutical / microplastic concerns

RO + NSF 401-certified post-stage is the comprehensive answer. We do not over-promise on niche removal claims โ€” we cite the specific NSF certification and removal percentage in the quote.

All specialty installs follow OBC 2024 Part 7 Section 7.6, CAN/CSA-B64.10 backflow prevention where required. Bilingual EN/RU service. 5-year RenoHouse coordination warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions About Specialty Water Filtration (PFAS, Arsenic, Fluoride, UV)

Likely some, in the low single-digit ng/L range. Environment and Climate Change Canada's Lake Ontario monitoring has detected PFAS in raw-water samples; treated tap is generally lower but rarely zero. Health Canada's August 2024 Objective is โ‰ค30 ng/L summed for 25 specified PFAS โ€” currently a precautionary group-based threshold (not yet a legally enforceable Maximum Acceptable Concentration). If you're concerned, RO at the kitchen sink or an NSF 53/401-certified PFAS cartridge stage is the practical at-home answer.

Two options. Reverse osmosis (RO) โ€” built-in to most kitchen-sink RO systems we install, 90โ€“95% fluoride rejection, also covers PFAS / lead / nitrate / chloramine. Activated alumina โ€” dedicated single-stage cartridge, 90%+ fluoride removal, requires periodic media regeneration with food-grade acid (we handle on annual service). Standard activated carbon does NOT remove fluoride โ€” be skeptical of any pitcher / fridge filter claiming fluoride reduction without naming the technology. Toronto fluoridates at 0.6 mg/L; York Region does not.

Three scenarios. (1) Well water with any coliform history โ€” UV is the standard permanent biological-disinfection stage paired with sediment / iron / softener pre-treatment. (2) Immunocompromised households (chemo, transplant recipients, severe immune deficiency) โ€” Princess Margaret Cancer Centre and similar Toronto institutions recommend UV + RO + boiled-water-bridging during high-risk treatment phases. (3) Boil-water advisory durability โ€” UV continues to disinfect when the City issues localized boil-water notices after watermain breaks. NSF 244 certification recommended. Viqua (made in Guelph) is the GTA standard; Trojan is the alternative.

Not always โ€” but it's worth a conversation. The priority concerns for pregnancy / infant formula prep are lead (from old service lines or fixtures), fluoride (formula already contains some, additional fluoride may exceed pediatric guidance), nitrate (rural well water in agricultural zones), and PFAS (precautionary). RO at the kitchen sink covers all four with one system, NSF 53/58/401/372 certified. Pediatricians at SickKids and broader Toronto practice often recommend RO during pregnancy and infant formula years, then less critical after 24 months.

Yes โ€” through reverse osmosis (>95% rejection of Crโถโบ) or specific NSF 53-certified cartridges. Health Canada has not set a separate Maximum Acceptable Concentration for chromium-6 (only total chromium at 0.05 mg/L), but US EPA monitoring data and California's Public Health Goal of 0.02 ยตg/L make it a topic of interest for chemical-sensitivity households. Toronto Lake Ontario water is not historically a high chromium-6 source, but we test and treat on request.
