Solar film (3M Solar, Llumar VLT, Madico SolarGard) rejects 60–80% of solar heat and 99%+ of UV — the goal is heat and glare reduction. Security film (3M Safety & Security, Llumar Magnum) is 8-mil to 14-mil thick and bonds to glass to hold broken pieces together — the goal is smash-resistance and entry deterrence. Combined safety+solar films exist (one application does both). We specify based on which problem you're solving — most Toronto homes need both, on different windows.

Depends on film thickness, anchoring, and attacker's tools. 8-mil film without anchoring: 30 seconds to 1 minute typical break-in delay (vs. immediate access on unfilmed glass). 12-mil film: 1–3 minutes. 14-mil film with mechanical anchoring (3M Impact Protection Adhesive bonded to the frame): 3–10 minutes against typical residential attack tools. None of these films are bullet-resistant or impenetrable — the goal is to create time for alarms, neighbours, and police response. Anchoring is critical for top-tier protection because without it a determined attacker can pop the entire pane out of the frame.

Yes — RenoHouse holds 3M Certified Installer status for safety/security film and solar films, which is required for the manufacturer's installation warranty (typically 10–15 years on professional-grade safety film). We are also Llumar-authorized for Llumar series films. We handle the install in-house with trained technicians; we do NOT subcontract to non-certified installers. Manufacturer-network certification is the qualification system for window-film work — there is no provincial license requirement.

It dramatically slows it but doesn't make a window unbreakable. The film bonds to glass so when the glass breaks the pieces are held together — the window doesn't shatter into the house, and the attacker has to keep hitting and prying through the film to gain access. Combined with an alarm system and good lighting, security film is one of the most cost-effective deterrents to opportunistic break-in: most attackers move on rather than fight a film for 3+ minutes. For top-tier protection, mechanical anchoring is essential.

Per-window install: 30–60 minutes for a typical residential window. Whole-home install (8–15 windows): 1 long day or 2 short days. Edge cure period (during which film may appear hazy as mounting solution evaporates): 7–14 days. We schedule installs to allow the homeowner to use the windows immediately — the cure period doesn't restrict use. For commercial or high-security installs with anchoring, allow an extra 30–45 minutes per window for the anchoring step.

Modern professional films are virtually invisible. 3M Night Vision Series and Llumar VLT 50–70 are designed for residential use where the homeowner wants the heat-rejection benefit without dark tinting; from inside they're optically clear, from outside they have a slight reflective character. Frosted/decorative films are intentionally visible. Safety/security films are clear unless tint is added. We do a sample install on one window when requested before committing to whole-home install.

Yes — both solar-control and safety/security films block 99%+ of UV-A and UV-B radiation. This protects hardwood floors, hardwood furniture, artwork, fabrics, and rugs from UV-driven fading. Fade rate on filmed glass: 5–15% of unfilmed glass. Particularly valuable in west-facing rooms with hardwood floors or art collections, and for homes with antique furniture or photo walls.

Some window manufacturers (Pella, Andersen) have warranty exclusions or restrictions on aftermarket window film. Most modern window manufacturers either (a) approve specific certified film series under a documented warranty agreement, or (b) accept film that's been installed by a manufacturer-certified installer and registered with the film manufacturer's warranty system. We verify the homeowner's window warranty status at the site visit before specifying the film. 3M Certified install + registered warranty satisfies most major window-warranty programs.

Professional-grade films carry 10–15 year manufacturer warranties (3M, Llumar) covering peeling, bubbling, discoloration, and seal failures. Many films last 20+ years in service before needing replacement. Care: clean with non-abrasive cleaner and soft cloth — avoid razor blades, abrasive scrubbers, and ammonia-based cleaners which can degrade some film series. Removal at end-of-life: razor blade scoring and ammonia solvent — labour-intensive but achievable.
