# Mudroom with Dog Wash Station Toronto: 2026 Design & Plumbing Guide

Dog ownership in the GTA has hit one of its highest levels on record. Pandemic-era adoptions are now grown dogs, and Toronto homeowners are actively building dog-friendly mudrooms with integrated wash stations. A proper dog wash adds $3,000โ€“$7,000 to a mudroom buildout in 2026 โ€” meaningful but, for the dog families we work with, easily justified within the first year of saved grooming bills and clean floors.

This post covers the design, plumbing, drainage, and fixture choices that make a dog wash actually work. For the broader mudroom framework, see our [Mudroom Buildout Toronto pillar guide](/blog/mudroom-buildout-toronto-2026). For overall costs, [Mudroom Cost Toronto: $4K Budget vs $40K Custom](/blog/mudroom-cost-toronto-comparison).

Dog Wash Station Sizing by Breed

The single biggest mistake we see: undersized dog wash for the dog. Plan for the breed at full adult size.

Dog SizeExample BreedsWash Station Size (W x D x H walls)Drain Position
Small (under 25 lb)Yorkie, Frenchie, Chihuahua24" x 30" x 24" wallsCenter or rear
Medium (25โ€“60 lb)Border Collie, Beagle, Cocker30" x 36" x 30" wallsCenter
Large (60โ€“100 lb)Lab, Golden, GSD, Husky36" x 42" x 36" wallsCenter
XL (100+ lb)Bernese, Newfoundland, Great Dane42" x 48" x 42" wallsLinear drain along one side
Multi-dog (2+)Two large dogs48" x 60" x 36" wallsLinear drain

The walls don't need to extend all the way to the ceiling โ€” 30โ€“42 inches is usually enough to contain shake-off splash. The whole station is essentially a tiled shallow tub.

Wash Station Height

Ground-level (zero-step) is the most common: dog walks in, you bend over for the wash. Adds shower-curb-style splash containment, simpler plumbing.

Raised platform (12โ€“24" off floor) is gaining popularity โ€” saves your back. Costs $500โ€“$1,200 more in framing/tile, but for medium-large dogs the back-saving is real.

For seniors, family members with back issues, or multiple large dogs, the raised platform is worth it.

Plumbing Specifications

A Toronto dog wash is essentially a small, low-walled shower. Plumbing is the same as a shower with a few tweaks.

Supply Lines

  • Hot/cold mixed valve โ€” Moen Posi-Temp or Delta MultiChoice. Pressure-balancing matters for dog comfort (fast pressure changes startle them).
  • Wand-style handheld shower head โ€” minimum 60" hose, ideally 72". Magnetic dock so it stows away cleanly.
  • Optional second shower head โ€” fixed at chest height for hands-free rinse.

Water Temperature

Set the mixing valve so max possible temperature is 38ยฐC / 100ยฐF. Hotter is uncomfortable for dogs โ€” they don't sweat. A scald-protection valve is a smart safety feature here.

Drainage

Drainage is the most-underestimated element. Dog hair clogs drains aggressively.

  • Linear drain (Schluter Kerdi-Line, Infinity Drain) along one wall โ€” best choice. Easy to clean, less hair clogging.
  • Center point drain with hair strainer โ€” second choice. Floor must slope 1/8" per foot to drain on all sides.
  • Drain trap โ€” must be accessible for hair removal. Plan for a removable cover.

Tie the drain into the existing drain stack within 12โ€“15 feet (gravity slope of 1/4" per foot). Beyond that, you may need to chase a new drain line through the slab or floor โ€” expensive.

Vent Stack

The drain needs a vent connection within 5 feet of the trap. Either tie into existing vent stack OR install an air-admittance valve (AAV) like a Studor mini-vent. AAVs cost $40โ€“$80 vs $400โ€“$1,200 for venting through the roof.

Permit Requirement

Plumbing permit through City of Toronto is required for any new fixture (dog wash counts). Cost: ~$300โ€“$500 in fees. Two inspections (rough-in + final).

Fixtures and Hardware

What we spec on RenoHouse dog wash builds:

  • Mixing valve: Moen Posi-Temp single-handle pressure-balancing โ€” ~$180โ€“$280.
  • Hand wand: Moen Brushed Nickel handheld with 60โ€“72" hose, magnetic dock โ€” ~$120โ€“$220.
  • Wall mount for wand: screwed into solid blocking, not just tile. Wand will see daily yanking.
  • Drain: Schluter Kerdi-Line linear (24" or 36") โ€” $250โ€“$450, plus connection to drain stack ~$200โ€“$400.
  • Faucet handles: lever-style for grippability with wet hands. Avoid round knobs.
  • Glass partition (optional): half-height tempered glass on one side to contain splash for showings without enclosing the dog. ~$400โ€“$800.

Wall and Floor Materials

The dog wash takes more abuse than a regular shower. Tile choices matter.

Floor

  • Porcelain mosaic 2"ร—2" โ€” best slip resistance, easy to seal. PEI 5, R10+ slip rating.
  • Pebble tile โ€” looks great but hard to clean dog hair from grout.
  • Linear concrete porcelain โ€” modern look, great drainage if pitched properly.

Sloped subfloor toward drain (1/8" per foot for a center drain, slope toward linear for linear drain).

Walls

  • Porcelain tile โ€” same as the floor, ideally going up 36โ€“48 inches.
  • Schluter Kerdi waterproofing membrane behind all tile. Mandatory in Toronto โ€” drywall behind tile fails within 5 years without proper waterproofing.

Grout

  • Epoxy grout (Mapei Kerapoxy, Laticrete SpectraLOCK) โ€” non-porous, doesn't stain from dog dirt, salt-resistant. Worth the upcharge ($100โ€“$200 over standard cementitious grout).

Ceiling Above Wash Station

Painted with mildew-resistant kitchen-and-bath paint (BM Aura Bath & Spa, SW Bath Paint). Dogs shake water everywhere โ€” the ceiling gets wetter than you expect.

Ventilation

Plan for moisture removal. Three options:

  • 1. Bathroom-style exhaust fan ducted to exterior, 80โ€“120 CFM โ€” cheapest. ~$300โ€“$500 installed.
  • 2. Heat-recovery ventilator (HRV) connection if the home has one โ€” best long-term, no heat loss.
  • 3. Operable window if you have one in the mudroom โ€” passive ventilation works in shoulder seasons.

Without ventilation, the mudroom-with-wash will smell mildewy within months.

Compress to $3Kโ€“$6K if existing plumbing is within 5 ft and no new vent stack is needed.

Layout Integration with the Mudroom

Where to put the dog wash:

Option A: Adjacent to the Mudroom Bench (Most Common)

Dog wash is on the perpendicular wall to the bench-and-cubbies, sharing the mudroom but in its own zone. Glass partition optional. ~50% of our installs.

Option B: Tucked Behind a Door

Dog wash inside a small closet-like space adjacent to the mudroom. Door closes, hides the wet-zone. Less open feel, but contains splash and smell. ~25% of our installs.

Option C: Garage or Garage-Adjacent

Dog wash in the garage-side of a pass-through mudroom. Dog enters dirty, gets washed, then steps into clean zone. Works great if garage is heated. ~15% of installs.

Option D: Combined with Laundry Tub

Dog wash doubles as a deep utility sink. Standing dog washes (small dogs only) work in a 24ร—30 raised utility tub. Cheaper but compromised. ~10% of installs.

Drying the Dog

Optional but loved features:

  • Heated floor in the wash zone โ€” same heated mat under tile, $200โ€“$400 added.
  • Wall-mounted dog dryer (forced-air, like a salon). Mount at 36โ€“48" high. Models from Flying Pig, K-9 II โ€” $300โ€“$700.
  • Towel hooks and a labeled "wet towel" hamper within reach.
  • Heated towel rail โ€” wrap dog in warm towel after wash. ~$300 installed.

Common Toronto Dog Wash Mistakes

  • Too small for the dog. A Bernese in a 24ร—30 station can't turn around; you spend the whole wash bent over a struggling animal.
  • Center drain only with no slope. Water pools in corners, breeds mold.
  • No ventilation. Mildew within months.
  • Cheap drain trap with no access cover. Hair clogs in 6 weeks; pulling the trap requires demo.
  • Round knobs on the mixing valve. Wet, soapy hands can't grip them.
  • Tile with porous grout. Stains in 90 days.
  • No second person space. A 36ร—42 station means one person and the dog only โ€” no helper. Plan for 30" of standing room outside the splash zone.

Permit Notes for Toronto

  • City of Toronto plumbing permit required.
  • Two inspections โ€” rough-in (before tile) and final (after).
  • ESA notification required if dedicated circuit added (heated floor, dryer fan).
  • Inspector notes we've seen: vent stack distance, slope to drain, scald-protection valve.
