A meticulous restoration of a 1960s ranch-style kitchen in Etobicoke, preserving original walnut cabinetry while integrating modern appliances and a striking new terrazzo backsplash.

Challenge

Integrating modern appliance electrical requirements into existing 1960s wiring without compromising the vintage aesthetic was a significant hurdle. Ensuring the original walnut cabinetry could be safely removed, restored off-site, and reinstalled without damage also posed a logistical challenge on a tight timeline.

Solution

The original walnut cabinets underwent meticulous hand-stripping and refinishing using a low-VOC, amber-toned oil for an authentic period look. We upgraded the electrical panel to accommodate new Energy Star appliances, specifically installing a dedicated 20A circuit for the induction range, compliant with OESC Rule 26-600. A custom-cut terrazzo slab was installed for the backsplash, complemented by new quartz countertops.

Result

The restoration significantly enhanced the home's market appeal and daily functionality, preserving its unique character. By meticulously restoring the original cabinetry, we saved the client an estimated $12,000 compared to a full custom replacement.
