Restoring a 1920s Forest Hill kitchen, this project integrated modern appliances while preserving original heritage cabinetry. Custom millwork ensured a seamless blend of classic charm with contemporary functionality.
Challenge
Integrating state-of-the-art kitchen appliances into existing 1920s heritage cabinetry without compromising its integrity presented a significant technical challenge. Ensuring new infrastructure, like plumbing and electrical for a Sub-Zero refrigerator, met current Toronto Building Code (TBC) standards within historic walls required careful planning and execution.
Solution
Our team employed bespoke millwork techniques to replicate the original door profiles, using quarter-sawn white oak to match existing grain patterns. Modern appliances, including a Sub-Zero IC-30FI refrigerator, were custom-fitted into newly constructed, period-appropriate enclosures. Electrical upgrades adhered to CSA C22.1-15 (Canadian Electrical Code) standards.
Result
The renovation successfully modernized the kitchen's functionality while enhancing its historical value, delivering a space that feels both authentic and contemporary. Despite the intricate custom work, the project was completed on schedule within 5 weeks, maintaining the home's unique character and significantly increasing its appeal.
โRenoHouse completed our kitchen renovation in just over 5 weeks, which was impressive given the custom work needed to fit the new Sub-Zero fridge. While the millwork to match our existing cabinets was exceptional, there were a couple of minor delays coordinating the final fixture installations.โ
