Specialty Water Filtration (PFAS, Arsenic, Fluoride, UV) in Whitby

Environment and Climate Change Canada's Lake Ontario monitoring has detected PFAS in raw-water samples; treated tap is generally lower but rarely zero. Health Canada's August 2024 Objective is ≤30 ng/L summed for 25 specified PFAS — currently a precautionary group-based threshold (not yet a legally enforceable Maximum Acceptable Concentration). If you're concerned, RO at the kitchen sink or an NSF 53/401-certified PFAS cartridge stage is the practical at-home answer.

Two options. Reverse osmosis (RO) — built-in to most kitchen-sink RO systems we install, 90–95% fluoride rejection, also covers PFAS / lead / nitrate / chloramine. Activated alumina — dedicated single-stage cartridge, 90%+ fluoride removal, requires periodic media regeneration with food-grade acid (we handle on annual service). Standard activated carbon does NOT remove fluoride — be skeptical of any pitcher / fridge filter claiming fluoride reduction without naming the technology. Whitby fluoridates at 0.6 mg/L; York Region does not.

Three scenarios. (1) Well water with any coliform history — UV is the standard permanent biological-disinfection stage paired with sediment / iron / softener pre-treatment. (2) Immunocompromised households (chemo, transplant recipients, severe immune deficiency) — Princess Margaret Cancer Centre and similar Whitby institutions recommend UV + RO + boiled-water-bridging during high-risk treatment phases. (3) Boil-water advisory durability — UV continues to disinfect when the City issues localized boil-water notices after watermain breaks. NSF 244 certification recommended. Viqua (made in Guelph) is the GTA standard; Trojan is the alternative.

Not always — but it's worth a conversation. The priority concerns for pregnancy / infant formula prep are lead (from old service lines or fixtures), fluoride (formula already contains some, additional fluoride may exceed pediatric guidance), nitrate (rural well water in agricultural zones), and PFAS (precautionary). RO at the kitchen sink covers all four with one system, NSF 53/58/401/372 certified. Pediatricians at SickKids and broader Whitby practice often recommend RO during pregnancy and infant formula years, then less critical after 24 months.

Health Canada has not set a separate Maximum Acceptable Concentration for chromium-6 (only total chromium at 0.05 mg/L), but US EPA monitoring data and California's Public Health Goal of 0.02 µg/L make it a topic of interest for chemical-sensitivity households. Whitby Lake Ontario water is not historically a high chromium-6 source, but we test and treat on request.
