Toronto GTA indoor gas line installation specialist team — licensed RenoHouse

TSSA G2 or G3 mandatory + Enbridge inspection before turn-on

Indoor gas line installation in Ontario is regulated by TSSA under CSA B149.1 Natural Gas and Propane Installation Code. Every new gas line — to a range, dryer, fireplace, indoor BBQ, or additional appliance — requires a TSSA G2-licensed gas fitter (full scope) or G3 (limited single-fixture), plus an Enbridge inspection before turn-on. RenoHouse holds the contract, our certified gas-fitter partner does the work. Pricing $320 – $1,800 installed Q2 2026 GTA.

Quick answer

Gas line install in progress
ScopeRangeTypical buyer
Single short run (≤ 10 ft, same floor) — e.g. gas range conversion$320 – $560electric range → gas range upgrade
Standard run (10-30 ft, one floor break) — e.g. fireplace, dryer$580 – $1,100gas fireplace add, gas dryer move
Long run / complex (30+ ft, multi-floor, multi-fixture)$1,100 – $1,800kitchen reno + new gas range + island, gas hookup for new appliance

Add $300 – $1,500 if Enbridge service upsize is required (total BTU load exceeds meter capacity — 250 CFH residential standard).

What's included

  • TSSA G2/G3 site assessment & BTU load calc (existing + new appliance demand)
  • Enbridge service capacity check (we confirm meter sizing)
  • Black iron pipe OR CSST (TracPipe / Wardflex) sized to BTU draw
  • Shut-off valves at appliance + main line
  • Pressure test (hydrostatic per CSA B149.1)
  • Enbridge inspection coordination + sign-off
  • Appliance commissioning (range/dryer/fireplace lit, combustion verified for fireplaces)
  • All permit close-out paperwork

Pipe selection

Pipe material comparison

Black iron pipe (Schedule 40 steel): traditional, durable, OBC default for new construction. Threaded fittings, multiple support points. Long-life. Used by us for main supply runs and exposed sections.

CSST flexible (TracPipe FGP / Wardflex): yellow corrugated stainless steel tubing. Faster install, especially through walls and joists. Must be properly bonded to the electrical grounding system per CSA B149.1 (lightning protection). Used by us for branch runs and tight retrofits.

PEX: NOT permitted for natural gas in Ontario (CSA B149.1).

Copper: permitted for SOME natural gas applications but not propane. We rarely use copper for gas.

Common scenarios

  1. Electric range → gas range conversion — gas line run from basement / utility room to kitchen wall. Most common indoor gas line job in Toronto. Typical 15-25 ft run, $480 – $850.
  1. Gas dryer hookup — line run to laundry room. Typical 10-20 ft run, $380 – $680.
  1. Gas fireplace install — supply to new fireplace location, often through finished wall cavity. $580 – $1,200 depending on routing.
  1. Kitchen renovation with gas island range — supply to centre-island location, requires floor coring. $980 – $1,800. Often paired with our Kitchen Renovation scope.
  1. Pool heater (indoor pool / spa) — heavy BTU load (150-300 kBTU/hr typical). Often triggers Enbridge service upsize. $800 – $1,800 line + $400 – $1,200 Enbridge upsize.
  1. Tankless water heater retrofit — separate page (see Tankless Water Heater); often requires ¾" line upsize from existing ½" supply. The gas-line scope is bundled there.
  1. Pre-existing pipe extension for new appliance — short branch added to existing line, $300 – $550 if no service upsize required.

Enbridge service capacity — the hidden cost

Oakville fireplace hookup

Most Toronto residential meters are sized at 250 CFH (cubic feet per hour) — enough for furnace + range + dryer + water heater combined typical demand (~180-220 CFH). Adding a new appliance can push total over 250 CFH, requiring:

ApplianceTypical BTU/hrCFH equivalent
Furnace (96% AFUE 60K)60,00060
Tankless water heater199,000199
Tank water heater (40 gal)40,00040
Gas range65,00065
Gas dryer22,00022
Gas fireplace28,00028
Pool heater250,000250

If your total demand exceeds 250 CFH, Enbridge upsizes the meter & regulator (free of charge for the meter itself; we charge $300 – $1,500 for the line modifications and re-piping). Pool heaters and tankless water heaters most commonly trigger this.

Permits & compliance

  • TSSA G2 for full-scope gas work; G3 (limited) acceptable for single-fixture installs
  • Toronto Building Permit for any new gas piping inside building envelope
  • Enbridge inspection mandatory before turn-on
  • CSA B149.1 Natural Gas and Propane Installation Code compliance
  • OBC 2024 Section 7 plumbing (re: routing through fire-rated assemblies)
  • No ESA permit for the gas line itself (low-voltage electrical to appliance ignition is separate, ESA-permitted)

Pressure test detail

May 1 – July 31 2026: Toronto restricts non-essential gas work during FIFA match windows in downtown catchment zones. Affected postal codes: M5A, M5B, M5C, M5G, M5H, M5J, M5T, M5V, plus parts of M4T, M6G, M6H near transit corridors. We can complete work outside match windows; budget 2-3 day buffer in those areas. Outside downtown core: minimal impact.

FAQ

Q: How much does an indoor gas line cost in Toronto? A: $320 – $1,800 installed depending on run length, fixtures served, and whether Enbridge service upsize is required. Most kitchen / dryer / fireplace adds land at $580 – $1,100. Free site assessment quotes the exact number.

Q: Can I run my own gas line? A: No. Gas work in Ontario requires TSSA G2 or G3 certification — homeowner DIY is illegal. Insurance won't pay claims on unlicensed gas work. We coordinate licensed gas fitters; you sign one contract with us.

Q: Do I need a permit? A: Yes — both TSSA permit (our gas fitter pulls) AND Toronto Building Permit for any new gas piping inside the building envelope. Enbridge inspection is also required before turn-on. We handle all paperwork.

Q: What's the difference between TSSA G2 and G3? A: G2 is the full gas fitter license — any gas work, any appliance. G3 is limited scope — single-fixture installs only (e.g. one gas range hookup). Both are valid for indoor gas work. We default to G2-licensed sub-contractor partners for flexibility.

Q: Is black iron pipe better than CSST? A: Both are CSA-approved. Black iron is durable and traditional — best for exposed runs. CSST (TracPipe, Wardflex) is faster to install through walls and joists — best for retrofits. CSST must be bonded to the electrical grounding system per CSA B149.1 (lightning protection). We choose based on routing — both end up the same price-per-foot installed.

Q: How long does the install take? A: 4-8 hours for short single-fixture run. 1-1.5 days for longer runs / multi-fixture. Enbridge inspection adds 1-3 business days lead time on first turn-on.

Q: What if my meter is too small for a new tankless water heater / pool heater? A: Enbridge upsizes the meter & regulator for free. We charge $300 – $1,500 for any line modifications + new larger inlet piping needed. Lead time 2-4 weeks for Enbridge service upgrade. We plan around this at consultation.

Q: Will this affect my home insurance? A: New gas appliances must be reported to your insurer (typical insurance T&Cs). Licensed install + Enbridge inspection + permit close-out gives you clean documentation — most insurers approve without rate change. DIY or unlicensed work voids coverage — never do this yourself.

Q: Can I install during FIFA 2026? A: Indoor gas work in non-downtown postal codes: yes, no restrictions. Downtown core (M5A-M5V): 2-3 day buffer recommended May 1 – July 31. We schedule around Enbridge inspector availability.

Q: What about radiant gas fireplace inserts vs free-standing units? A: Both supported. Inserts (existing wood fireplace → gas insert): line run + insert install + venting check. $1,200 – $2,800 total (most of cost is insert + venting, gas line is $400-$700). Free-standing direct-vent: $980 – $1,800 line + $1,500-$3,500 unit + venting. We coordinate with fireplace specialty installers.

Q: How safe are gas lines really? A: Properly installed, leak-tested, and pressure-verified gas lines have an excellent safety record. Hazard sources: (1) DIY unlicensed work (top cause of claims), (2) damage during renovation (we tag and protect lines during demolition), (3) shutoff valve failure (we use OSC ¼-turn ball valves — superior to old gate valves). Carbon monoxide detectors per OBC 9.32 + gas detectors recommended near appliances. We test every installation with combustible-gas detector at commissioning.

Toronto/GTA neighborhood considerations

  • Forest Hill / Rosedale / Lawrence Park (heritage): Pre-war black-iron NPT-threaded indoor gas line — corroded fitting common at 90-elbow joint near coal-furnace conversion. Typical replacement segment $480-$1,200 + TSSA inspection. CSA-approved CSST (Wardflex, Gastite TracPipe) for new runs $14-$22 per LF installed.
  • North York / Scarborough / Etobicoke (60s-70s): 60s-70s black-iron 1/2-inch + 3/4-inch threaded NPT — direct-thread Loctite 51360 (yellow) anaerobic sealant or Teflon yellow gas-rated tape. Modern equivalent CSST (Wardflex 1/2-inch up to 5/8-inch ID) for re-runs. $14-$22 per LF.
  • Mississauga / Brampton / Vaughan (90s+): 1990s black-iron NPT + early CSST — typical scope is appliance-add gas-line (range, dryer, BBQ outdoor stub) $480-$1,200 each + TSSA inspection.
  • Caledon / King City / Aurora (rural well): Rural propane tank-feed indoor line — first-stage Marshall Excelsior MEGR-296 regulator + second-stage Maxitrol RV81 at appliance. Underground polyethylene (PE2406 1-1/4 inch SDR-11) on yard runs to 100m. $1,800-$3,800 yard run + indoor riser.
  • Downtown condos: In-suite gas-range or fireplace line — limited to in-suite scope, building-level riser owned by condo. Range-line $480-$880 + TSSA permit.

Permit + license: TSSA G2 (under 400,000 BTU) or G1 (unrestricted) gas fitter mandatory — separate Federal certification (not Ontario-trade). CSA B149.1 gas code, CSA B149.2 propane storage. TSSA Permit + inspection. $5M general liability + propane-handler endorsement on rural.
