Outdoor Gas Line Installation in Toronto GTA
RenoHouse coordinates outdoor natural-gas line installations for Toronto and GTA homeowners running new gas service to BBQs, fire pits, fire tables, outdoor kitchens, pool heaters, patio heaters, and pool/spa equipment. Our scope is general-contractor-led project management: site assessment, gas-line sizing per CSA B149.1, TSSA-permitted installation by a certified G2 (or G1) gas-fitter partner, Enbridge service-call coordination if a meter or service-line upsize is needed, trenching and reinstatement of any landscape disturbed during the run, and final TSSA inspection sign-off. We do NOT pull TSSA documentation or weld gas piping ourselves โ that rests with our certified G2 gas-fitter partner.
Why outdoor gas is so common in Toronto
Roughly 60% of Toronto's residential properties already have natural gas piped to the building for furnace, water heater, and range. Adding an outdoor branch off the existing house gas system is by far the most common scope โ the homeowner already has gas at the property, and an outdoor BBQ run-off the basement supply trunk is a one-day install in most cases. Less common but still frequent: a dedicated outdoor kitchen with a 60,000โ120,000 BTU island, a pool heater (250,000โ400,000 BTU/hr loads), or a fire pit with a manual-spark or remote-ignition burner. New service to a property that doesn't currently have gas is a different scope โ it requires Enbridge service-line installation (typically $1,500โ$5,000 separately, on Enbridge's schedule, 6โ16 weeks lead time), and is best coordinated as a multi-appliance project.
Project value
Single BBQ run from existing house supply (typical: 25โ60 ft underground run from basement supply manifold to backyard quick-disconnect, regulator, BBQ-end shutoff): $1,500โ$3,000. Fire pit / fire table run (similar scope, slightly higher BTU sizing, often a manual or remote spark ignition tied to the gas line): $1,800โ$3,500. Outdoor kitchen run (multiple appliances โ BBQ, side burner, refrigerator vent, lighting): $2,500โ$5,000. Pool heater run (high BTU sizing, sometimes requires meter/service upsize from Enbridge): $2,500โ$5,000 plus Enbridge upsize cost if applicable. Patio heater run (single tap-off from existing run, regulator, hose, quick-disconnect): $800โ$1,500 if existing outdoor run is already in place. Pricing depends on (1) trenching distance and surface restoration scope (lawn vs. interlock vs. concrete deck), (2) BTU load and required pipe size (CSA B149.1 sizing chart โ common runs are 1/2" to 3/4" black iron or yellow polyethylene PE), (3) whether an existing manifold has spare capacity or needs to be expanded, (4) whether Enbridge service or meter upsize is required for the new total load.
Honest scope โ TSSA G2 license is the regulatory gate
Natural-gas piping is regulated under Ontario's TSSA Fuels Safety Program. All gas-piping work must be performed by a TSSA-certified gas fitter โ G2 license covers residential up to 400,000 BTU/hr (suitable for almost all home-owner outdoor projects); G1 covers larger/commercial loads. RenoHouse does NOT hold a TSSA G2 license โ we coordinate certified G2 gas-fitter partners (members of the Ontario Plumbing Inspector Association, or licensed plumbing-and-heating firms) for all gas-piping work. RenoHouse holds the construction contract, manages the project, handles trenching and surface reinstatement (which is unregulated reno work), and stands behind the customer experience. The G2 partner pulls the TSSA permit, performs the installation per CSA B149.1, runs the pressure test, and signs off on TSSA documentation.
The Enbridge interface
When the new outdoor gas load can be served by the home's existing meter and service line, no Enbridge involvement is required โ the G2 fitter taps off the building's interior gas piping, runs the new branch through the foundation, and connects to the outdoor appliance. When the new load exceeds the meter's rated capacity (most common with large outdoor kitchens or pool heaters), Enbridge must be engaged for a meter upsize (typically $400โ$1,500 paid through an Enbridge service request, 4โ12 weeks lead time). When the property has no existing gas service at all, Enbridge installs a new service line from the street main to the meter base โ typically $1,500โ$5,000 on Enbridge's schedule, 8โ16 weeks lead time. RenoHouse coordinates the Enbridge service-call and meter-upgrade timeline with our G2 partner; we cannot accelerate Enbridge's scheduling but we manage it transparently.
Permits and TSSA documentation
All outdoor gas-line installations require a TSSA gas-piping permit pulled by the certified G2 gas fitter. The permit covers (a) gas-line sizing per CSA B149.1, (b) materials (yellow PE for underground, black iron or galvanized steel for exposed runs, manufacturer-approved fittings), (c) burial depth (24" minimum below grade for non-vehicular areas, 36" under driveways), (d) pressure-test sign-off (typically 60 PSI for 30 minutes), (e) final inspection by TSSA. Building permits are usually NOT required for outdoor gas-line work alone (the gas-line permit covers it), but if the project includes a new outdoor structure (pergola, outdoor kitchen island, fence post penetrations), the structural work may need its own permit. We screen for permit triggers at the site assessment.
Trenching, restoration, and outdoor coordination
Trenching is the visible part of the project to the homeowner โ a 25โ60 ft trench across a backyard, often through lawn, garden beds, or interlocking pavers. RenoHouse handles trenching and surface reinstatement: lawn restoration with sod or seed, interlock relay, concrete patching where applicable. We coordinate with landscape and irrigation systems to avoid sprinkler-line damage. For projects on driveways or under hardscape, we use directional boring or excavation as appropriate. The homeowner sees one company managing the trench, the gas-fitter visit, the Enbridge appointment (when applicable), and the final restoration.
Common pitfalls we manage
(1) Underestimated BTU load โ homeowners often plan for a single BBQ but want to add a side-burner or pool heater later; we size the line for future expansion at the design stage so a re-run isn't needed in 2 years. (2) Ignored Enbridge meter capacity โ a larger outdoor kitchen or pool heater can push total household load past the meter rating; verifying capacity at the site visit avoids a project hold mid-install. (3) Heritage Conservation District restrictions โ visible outdoor gas lines, regulators, or shutoffs on heritage-character frontages may require Heritage Permit in HCDs. (4) Winter weather โ gas-line trenching is harder and more expensive in frozen ground (DecemberโMarch); we recommend booking spring/summer/fall installs when possible and we are transparent about winter cost premiums (typically +15โ25% for trenching).

Frequently Asked Questions About Outdoor Gas Line Installation
Single BBQ run from existing house supply: $1,500โ$3,000. Fire pit / fire table run: $1,800โ$3,500. Outdoor kitchen run (multiple appliances): $2,500โ$5,000. Pool heater run (high BTU): $2,500โ$5,000 plus Enbridge upsize cost if applicable. Patio heater run off existing line: $800โ$1,500. Pricing depends on trenching distance, surface restoration scope (lawn vs. interlock vs. concrete), BTU load and pipe size, and whether an Enbridge meter or service upsize is needed.
Yes. All gas-piping work in Ontario is regulated under TSSA's Fuels Safety Program. A TSSA gas-piping permit must be pulled by a TSSA-certified G2 (or G1) gas fitter; the permit covers sizing per CSA B149.1, materials, burial depth, pressure test, and final inspection. RenoHouse does NOT hold a TSSA G2 license โ we coordinate certified G2 gas-fitter partners for all gas-piping work. RenoHouse handles the construction contract, trenching, and reinstatement; the G2 partner pulls the permit and signs off on TSSA documentation.
Often no for a single BBQ โ the existing house meter usually has spare capacity. For larger outdoor kitchens or pool heaters (high BTU draws), the meter or service line may need to be upsized. Enbridge meter upsize: $400โ$1,500, 4โ12 weeks lead time. New service line to a property with no existing gas: $1,500โ$5,000, 8โ16 weeks lead time. We verify meter capacity at the site visit and coordinate the Enbridge appointment when needed โ Enbridge's schedule, not ours.
CSA B149.1 requires minimum 24" of cover below grade in non-vehicular areas (lawns, gardens, walkways) and minimum 36" under driveways and other vehicular surfaces. Yellow polyethylene (PE) is the standard underground material; black iron is the standard exposed-run material above grade or in protected enclosures. Pressure test (typically 60 PSI for 30 minutes) is required before backfill and final inspection. Burial depth and materials are inspected by TSSA before close-out.
BTU load determines pipe size and meter requirements. Common appliance loads: BBQ 30,000โ60,000 BTU/hr; side burner +15,000 BTU/hr; fire pit 60,000โ125,000 BTU/hr; pool heater 250,000โ400,000 BTU/hr; patio heater 35,000โ50,000 BTU/hr; outdoor pizza oven 35,000โ60,000 BTU/hr. The G2 fitter sizes the pipe per CSA B149.1 considering total simultaneous load and run length. We design for future expansion at the start of the project so an extra side burner or future patio heater can tap in without a re-run.
Site visit: 60 minutes. Permit prep and TSSA submission: 1โ2 weeks. Install day(s): 1 day for typical BBQ run from existing supply (trenching + line install + pressure test + final). 1โ2 days for outdoor kitchen with multiple appliances. 2โ3 days when surface reinstatement (interlock relay, concrete patching, sod) is part of scope. TSSA inspection: 1โ2 days scheduling after pressure test. Total clock 2โ4 weeks contract-to-commissioning when no Enbridge involvement; 6โ14 weeks when Enbridge service or meter upgrade is required.
Yes. RenoHouse handles trenching, surface reinstatement (lawn with sod or seed, interlock relay, concrete patching), and coordination with sprinkler systems and other underground services. We use directional boring on driveways and under hardscape where excavation isn't practical. The homeowner sees one company managing the trench, the gas-fitter visit, the Enbridge appointment (when applicable), and final restoration.
About 40% of Toronto properties don't have a gas connection โ typically all-electric homes, older homes that were never converted, or properties beyond the gas main. If you want gas service installed, Enbridge runs a new service line from the street main to the meter base; cost typically $1,500โ$5,000 plus an installation fee, lead time 8โ16 weeks on Enbridge's schedule. We coordinate the Enbridge installation and queue the outdoor gas-line work to start once the new service is energized.
Heritage Conservation Districts (Cabbagetown, Riverdale, Annex, Wychwood, parts of the Beaches) may require Heritage Permit if outdoor gas lines, regulators, or shutoffs are visible from the street on heritage-character frontages. Most outdoor gas runs are on the rear of the property and don't trigger heritage review, but front-yard fire pits or street-side decorative gas lighting can. We screen for triggers at the site visit and coordinate Heritage Permit when needed.
Yes but more expensive. Frozen ground DecemberโMarch increases trenching cost (+15โ25% typically) and slows the install. We recommend booking spring/summer/fall installs when possible. For pool heaters that need to be commissioned for spring opening, we commonly book the gas-line install in March/April so the system is ready for May pool opening. Emergency winter installs are possible but the homeowner accepts the cost premium and longer install timeline.
