Restoration of original 1920s wood sash windows and integration of custom storm windows for a heritage-protected Toronto home, ensuring compliance with Heritage Bylaw 813 standards.
Challenge
The primary challenge was preserving the intricate historical details of the original 1920s wood sashes while upgrading thermal performance without altering the exterior aesthetic. Navigating strict City of Toronto Heritage Bylaw 813 required precise material matching and approval for every repair method.
Solution
We meticulously repaired rotted wood using epoxy consolidants and traditional joinery, matching existing profiles. Custom-fabricated, low-profile exterior storm windows from Marvin were installed, featuring historic glass replication and ensuring an R-value improvement of 2.1 as per project specifications.
Result
The project successfully enhanced the home's energy efficiency and comfort, significantly reducing drafts and outside noise while maintaining its historical integrity. Energy consumption for heating is estimated to have dropped by 18%, increasing indoor comfort year-round and boosting property value.
โRenoHouse handled our old windows with incredible care; I was particularly impressed with how they matched the original wood profiles on the sashes that needed repairs. The installation of the storm windows, done over eight weeks, was very neat, and we immediately noticed a difference in how quiet and warm the house feels now.โ
