# Gas Fireplace vs Fire Pit Outdoor Toronto 2026
A Toronto homeowner planning a gas-fueled outdoor focal point has two main options: a vertical gas fireplace (often built into a stone wall, an outdoor great-room pillar, or a pergola) or a horizontal gas fire pit (a low, wide, pad-mounted bowl or trough). Both are CSA-rated decorative appliances. Both require a TSSA G2 licensed gas-fitter for the line, the connection, and the commissioning. Both require a documented pressure test and a building-exit shut-off valve.
The right choice for any given backyard depends on the architectural style, the seating arrangement, the BTU output desired, and the budget. This RenoHouse cluster post lays out the comparison.
Our role. RenoHouse coordinates TSSA G2 licensed gas-fitter subcontractors plus the masonry, deck, or hardscape work that surrounds the appliance. We do not perform gas-fitting in-house.The Aesthetic Difference
Outdoor gas fireplace. A vertical structure with a flame contained behind a glass face or an open hearth. Typically built into a stone or concrete wall feature, sometimes as the focal point of an outdoor great room, sometimes as a divider between a deck and a yard. Gives a cottage / great-room feel. Outdoor gas fire pit. A low horizontal feature โ bowl, square pan, or linear trough โ at coffee-table height. Seating wraps around it 360 degrees. Gives a campfire / circle-of-friends feel. The two appliances target different social configurations: a fireplace is a viewing focal point (people sit in front of it on a sofa); a fire pit is a gathering point (people sit around it in chairs).
BTU Output
Typical BTU input for outdoor decorative appliances:
- Outdoor gas fireplace, small to mid-size: 30,000 โ 60,000 BTU/h
- Outdoor gas fireplace, large feature unit: 60,000 โ 90,000 BTU/h
- Outdoor gas fire pit, small bowl: 60,000 โ 80,000 BTU/h
- Outdoor gas fire pit, standard backyard size: 80,000 โ 120,000 BTU/h
- Outdoor gas fire pit, large feature: 120,000 โ 200,000 BTU/h
- Linear gas fire feature (48" โ 72" trough): 100,000 โ 180,000 BTU/h
In general, a fire pit puts out more BTU than a fireplace of similar visual size because the fire is open to the sky on a fire pit (more flame, more heat radiating) versus partially enclosed in a fireplace.

Despite the BTU numbers, the felt heat is different:
- Fireplace: heat is directed forward into a relatively small zone (the seating area in front of the fireplace). Good for a sheltered patio, a covered outdoor great room, or a wall feature on a deck.
- Fire pit: heat radiates 360 degrees, but spreads thin. Less effective at warming people in cold weather, but more inviting for a gathering.
For a covered outdoor space where heating is a priority, wall-mounted infrared patio heaters often beat both for actual warming โ see [Gas Patio Heater Installation Toronto](/blog/gas-patio-heater-installation-toronto).
Code and Clearances
Same TSSA G2 licensed gas-fitter requirement, same CSA B149.1 code, same pressure test, same building-exit shut-off, same key valve near the appliance. Differences:
- Fireplace clearances: typically larger because the appliance is enclosed and the manufacturer specifies clearances to combustibles around the chase. Often a non-combustible chase (stone, concrete board) is required.
- Fire pit clearances: typically smaller in horizontal footprint but specific overhead clearance requirements (often 8 to 12 ft to a covered structure, and many manufactured fire pits are not approved for use under any covered structure at all).
The G2 sub confirms clearances per the manufacturer's installation manual on every project.
Footprint and Construction
Fireplace footprint. Typically 6 to 10 ft wide, 2 to 4 ft deep, 6 to 10 ft tall. The chase is built of non-combustible material (stone or concrete board over steel framing). Often has a hearth, a mantle, a flue cap, and a glass or open-hearth face. Construction is masonry or carpentry-heavy and adds significant cost beyond the gas portion. Fire pit footprint. Typically 3 to 5 ft diameter (round), 3 to 5 ft square, or a 4 to 6 ft long linear trough. Pad-level. Construction is either a manufactured CSA-rated unit (drop in, connect gas, done) or a custom stone enclosure with a CSA-listed burner kit inside.Realistic 2026 CAD Pricing
For the gas portion only (TSSA G2 sub, line, shut-offs, pressure test, permit where required):
- Outdoor gas fireplace, 25โ50 ft line run: $1,800 โ $3,000
- Outdoor gas fire pit, 25โ50 ft line run: $1,800 โ $3,000
The gas portion is similar; the major cost difference is the appliance and the construction around it:
- Manufactured outdoor gas fireplace insert + chase masonry: $8,000 โ $30,000+ all-in
- Manufactured CSA-rated outdoor fire pit + minimal pad: $2,500 โ $9,000 all-in
- Custom built-in stone fire pit + CSA-listed burner kit: $4,000 โ $12,000 all-in
A full custom outdoor great room with a built-in fireplace, mantle, and seating wall can easily reach $50,000 to $100,000 in Toronto. A drop-in CSA-rated fire pit on an existing patio can be done for $5,000 to $10,000 all-in.
Which Is Right for Which Backyard
A few real-world rules of thumb we use when scoping these projects:
- Backyard with an existing patio and a circle seating arrangement, $5,000 โ $10,000 budget: drop-in CSA-rated fire pit.
- Backyard with a planned hardscape build and 8 to 10 chairs around a feature, $10,000 โ $20,000 budget: custom built-in fire pit with stone enclosure.
- Outdoor great room with covered roof and a furniture group facing one wall, $30,000+ budget: outdoor gas fireplace built into the wall.
- Pergola with an entertaining bar and a patio heater bank: skip the fireplace and fire pit; use wall-mount infrared heaters.
