# Gas Fire Pit Installation Toronto 2026

A permanent natural gas fire pit eliminates the propane tank that always seems to be empty, removes the smoke and embers of a wood fire, and turns a backyard into a three-season gathering space. In Toronto, the gas line and connection portion is regulated work that requires a TSSA G2 licensed gas-fitter and a documented pressure test. The fire pit appliance itself must be CSA-rated for outdoor decorative use.

This RenoHouse cluster post walks through what a gas fire pit installation looks like in 2026 Toronto, BTU sizing, code-required clearances, key valve placement, and realistic CAD pricing.

Our role. RenoHouse coordinates TSSA G2 licensed gas-fitter subcontractors for every outdoor gas project. We are not a gas-fitting contractor in-house. The G2 sub performs the install and the pressure test; RenoHouse coordinates the design, permit, schedule, and finish work.

Two Categories: Manufactured Fire Pit vs Custom Built-In

Almost every Toronto gas fire pit project falls into one of two categories:

  • 1. Manufactured CSA-rated fire pit appliance โ€” bought as a complete unit (Solus Decor, Paloform, AJ Ross, Modfire, Outland Living, Napoleon, Travis Industries). Comes with the burner, the safety pilot, the spark ignition, and the CSA certification. The G2 sub installs the gas line and connects to the appliance per the manufacturer's instructions.
  • 2. Custom built-in fire pit using a CSA-listed burner kit โ€” a stone, concrete, or metal enclosure built on site, with a CSA-listed burner kit (HPC, Warming Trends, Crossfire) installed inside. The burner kit must be CSA-rated; the structure must follow the kit manufacturer's clearance and ventilation specifications. The G2 sub installs the gas line, the burner, the safety pilot, and tests the system.

The TSSA G2 license requirement is the same for both. The cost varies because the appliance cost is bundled into Option 1 and not into Option 2.

BTU Sizing for Toronto Fire Pits

Typical natural gas fire pit BTU input ranges by application:

  • Small intimate fire bowl (24" โ€“ 30" diameter): 60,000 โ€“ 80,000 BTU/h
  • Standard backyard fire pit (36" โ€“ 42" diameter): 80,000 โ€“ 120,000 BTU/h
  • Large feature fire pit (48"+ diameter): 120,000 โ€“ 200,000 BTU/h
  • Linear fire feature (48" โ€“ 72" trough): 100,000 โ€“ 180,000 BTU/h

The BTU input drives the gas line size from the meter. Pipe sizing is done by the G2 sub using CSA B149.1 Section 6 capacity tables. A typical 100,000 BTU/h fire pit on a 40-foot run from the meter needs at least 3/4" black iron or equivalent CSST.

Key Valve and Shut-Off Placement

Every gas fire pit in Toronto requires:

  • A manual shut-off ball valve at the building exit (CSA-rated for natural gas).
  • A key valve or remote shut-off near the fire pit for daily use โ€” typically 6 to 10 feet from the fire pit so the user can turn off the gas without reaching over the flame.
  • A second shut-off at the burner itself for service and removal.

The key valve location matters for both safety and code compliance. CSA B149.1 requires the valve to be accessible, labeled, and outside the flame envelope. The G2 sub finalizes valve placement on site.

Clearance Requirements

The fire pit appliance manufacturer (or the burner kit manufacturer for a custom build) specifies the required clearances to combustibles. Typical residential fire pit clearances:

  • Vertical clearance to a covered structure (pergola, gazebo, awning): typically 8 to 12 feet, but always check the manufacturer's specification. Many manufactured fire pits are not approved for use under any covered structure.
  • Horizontal clearance to combustible materials (wood deck rail, fence, planter): typically 3 to 6 feet.
  • Clearance to property line and to neighbouring structures: governed by Toronto Fire Code and the manufacturer's specification โ€” usually a minimum of 3 metres from a property line for an unenclosed flame appliance.

A custom built-in fire pit on a wood deck must have a non-combustible base (stone, concrete, or steel) sized per the burner manufacturer's requirements. The G2 sub will not commission a fire pit that does not meet these clearances.

Realistic 2026 CAD Pricing

For a typical Toronto natural gas fire pit installation (RenoHouse-coordinated, TSSA G2 sub, all-in for the gas line and connection):

  • Manufactured CSA-rated fire pit, 25 to 50 ft gas line run, single appliance: $1,800 โ€“ $3,000 for the gas line work (appliance is separate, typically $1,500 โ€“ $8,000)
  • Custom built-in with CSA-listed burner kit, 25 to 50 ft gas line run: $2,200 โ€“ $3,800 for the gas line and burner install (the stone or concrete enclosure is a separate hardscape scope)
  • Add a key valve enclosure box: $200 โ€“ $400
  • Long run (50โ€“100 ft): add $400 โ€“ $1,200

Add the fire pit appliance cost on top, plus the hardscape build cost if it is a custom enclosure.

Coordinated with Other Outdoor Work

Gas fire pits are most often built as part of a larger outdoor renovation. Common bundles:

  • Fire pit + BBQ line on the same trench. See [Gas BBQ Line Installation Cost Toronto](/blog/gas-bbq-line-installation-cost-toronto).
  • Fire pit on a new composite deck, line buried before decking. See [Composite Decking Toronto 2026](/blog/composite-decking-toronto-2026).
  • Fire pit + outdoor kitchen. See [Outdoor Kitchen Gas Line Toronto](/blog/outdoor-kitchen-gas-line-toronto).

Code, Permit, and Pressure Test

The same regulatory framework as any outdoor gas project: TSSA G2 sub, CSA B149.1 compliance, City of Toronto permit where required, documented pressure test before backfill. See the pillar at [Outdoor Gas Line Installation Toronto 2026: Complete Guide](/blog/outdoor-gas-line-installation-toronto-2026-complete-guide) for the full code walkthrough.
